Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Erith
Gardeners Erith is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors, and members of the public. We recognise our legal and moral responsibilities to manage our activities so that risks are identified, controlled, and reduced as far as is reasonably practicable.
Policy Aims and Scope
This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all gardening work, including lawn care, planting, hedge cutting, tree and shrub work, garden clearance, and maintenance of outdoor spaces. It applies to all employees of Gardeners Erith and to any contractors or temporary workers engaged on our behalf.
Our aims are to prevent injury and ill health, protect the environment in which we work, and continually improve our performance in health and safety management.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Erith has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. Management will:
Plan work so that health and safety risks are assessed before tasks begin, and appropriate control measures are in place. Provide and maintain safe systems of work, safe equipment, and suitable personal protective equipment. Ensure that employees receive appropriate information, instruction, and training for their roles and the tasks they perform. Monitor health and safety performance, investigate any accidents, incidents, or near misses, and take corrective action where required. Review the Health and Safety Policy regularly and revise it when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance, or working practices.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Erith has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must:
Follow all health and safety procedures, safe systems of work, and instructions provided. Use equipment, machinery, and tools only for their intended purpose and in accordance with training received. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment where required, and report any defects or damage immediately. Report accidents, incidents, hazards, near misses, or unsafe conditions to their supervisor without delay. Cooperate with management to enable Gardeners Erith to fulfil its health and safety obligations.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting gardening work, we assess the risks associated with the tasks, the environment, and any specific client requirements. Risk assessments consider factors such as terrain, weather, access, proximity to roads or water, presence of underground services, and use of machinery and chemicals.
From these assessments we develop safe systems of work that set out how tasks will be carried out safely. These may include methods for manual handling, ladder use, operating powered tools, working near highways, and controlling exposure to noise, vibration, and substances used in gardening.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
Gardeners Erith is committed to ensuring that all work equipment used in the course of gardening operations is suitable, properly maintained, and used correctly. We will:
Provide tools and machinery that are fit for purpose, regularly inspected, and serviced in line with manufacturer guidance. Remove from service any defective equipment until it is repaired or replaced. Ensure employees are trained and competent to use the equipment they operate. Require guards, safety devices, and controls to be used and never overridden or bypassed.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is used to reduce the risk of injury where hazards cannot be eliminated or sufficiently controlled by other means. Depending on the task and site conditions, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high visibility clothing, helmets, and respiratory protection.
Employees must use the personal protective equipment provided, keep it in good condition, and report any loss or damage so that it can be replaced.
Working Practices and Site Safety
We plan our gardening work to minimise risks to clients, visitors, passers-by, and the public. This includes:
Setting up safe working areas and controlling access to where machinery and tools are being used. Using signs or barriers when necessary to protect people nearby. Managing vehicle and pedestrian movements where access is shared or restricted. Keeping work areas as tidy as possible to reduce slips, trips, and falls. Storing tools, materials, and chemicals safely and securely when not in use.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Considerations
When using gardening products such as fertilisers, weed control agents, or other substances, we follow relevant safety guidance and product instructions. We assess any risks to health and the environment, and implement control measures such as appropriate storage, handling procedures, and use of protective equipment.
We seek to minimise any adverse impact on the surrounding environment and take care when working near watercourses, drains, wildlife habitats, and neighbouring properties.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Erith will provide employees with training and information relevant to their role, including induction training, instruction on the safe use of machinery, manual handling, safe working at height, and emergency arrangements.
Supervision will be appropriate to the experience and competence of employees, and less experienced workers will receive additional guidance and oversight until they are deemed competent.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
We maintain procedures for reporting and dealing with accidents, incidents, and near misses that occur during our gardening operations. All incidents must be reported as soon as possible so that they can be recorded, investigated, and lessons learned can be applied.
Emergency arrangements, including first aid and actions in case of fire or serious injury, are communicated to employees. First aid provisions are made available during work, and employees are informed of the location of first aid supplies and trained first aiders when present.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Erith monitors health and safety performance through regular checks, equipment inspections, and review of incident reports. We will review this Health and Safety Policy periodically and when there are significant changes to our operations or relevant legislation.
We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety. Feedback from employees, clients, and other parties is welcomed and will be taken into account when updating our procedures and practices.
This Health and Safety Policy demonstrates the intention of Gardeners Erith to conduct all gardening and maintenance activities responsibly and with due regard to the wellbeing of everyone affected by our work.
